Oscar Winners to Make Ghost Recon Short Film
March 9, 2010

Heat Vision is reporting that the directors and Oscar winners behind Logorama will direct a live-action Ghost Recon short film.

Francois Alaux and Herve de Crecy will create a 20-minute live-action film for the latest of Ubisoft's video game, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon. The film will be titled Future Soldier and is set for release around December.

The WME-repped Alaux and de Crecy are working with Tim Sexton, one of the writers of Children of Men, on what will act as a prequel of sorts, setting up the story about a squad of U.S. Special Forces.

Ubisoft has budgeted between $8 and $10 million for the project. Ridley and Tony Scott's commercial and music video shingle RSA is producing.

Logorama was something of a surprise win Sunday night, beating out the favored Wallace & Gromit short A Matter of Loaf and Death by Nick Park, who has four Oscar wins under his belt.

The 16-minute Logorama is set in a Los Angeles where everything from buildings to cars to animals and even people are made up of corporate logos. The story has police officers looking like Michelin Men chasing a psychopathic Ronald McDonald. Part of the film can be viewed on YouTube.

The Recon short shows that Ubisoft is moving more into the short business as a way to promote their games. The company released its first short, Assassin's Creed: Lineage, in November. Part one of the short can be viewed here with parts two and three available here.

Warner Bros. Wants Space Invaders Rights
March 2, 2010

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Warner Bros. is currently negotiating for the film rights to Space Invaders.

With a movie version of Missile Command essentially set up at Fox and an adaptation of Asteroids in development at Universal, it was only a matter of time before a studio decided to take on the grandfather of all video games, Space Invaders.

Warner Bros. is negotiating to acquire feature rights to the landmark shooter from Taito, the Japanese company that originally manufactured the game. If the rights issues all work out, the project would bring on Hollywood fixtures Mark Gordon, Jason Blum and Guymon Casady as producers.

Gordon is a film veteran with experience at the big-budget art house (Saving Private Ryan) as well as the big-budget commercial (Day After Tomorrow). Blum is best known for producing horror breakout Paranormal Activity and Cassady is a manager-producer with a slew of high-profile clients.

It's not surprising that Warner Bros. would look to jump-start a Space Invaders movie; last summer the studio bought Midway, the video game's U.S. publisher (which does not control theatrical rights), and also is developing a feature of another video game, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

Space Invaders was of course the iconic game that helped start it all, a Japanese-created arcade title from 1978 that featured roving attacking ships raining vertical fire on the player's craft, which dodged and fired back. It later vaulted to prominence via the Atari 2600.

There's a bit of a loop-closing thing happening, since the game itself was inspired (loosely) by sci-fi movies like Star Wars. Still, like most games of the era, Space Invaders features little back story, which is why it's anyone's guess what shape a movie might take.

Which we suppose is also part of the appeal, since any script involving science fiction, or invasions, or shooting, can reasonably be produced and released as a Space Invaders movie (though we hear Marlowe's take is a solid one). Still, we do have to ask: With three vintage video games in development at three studios, can Pac-Man or Frogger be far behind?

Note: Andrew W. Marlowe is a screenwriter whose credits include Air Force One, End of Days, Hollow Man, and is currently attached to Nick Fury.

O'Connor Restates Halo Status
March 1, 2010

IGN talked once again to Microsoft Studios' Frank O'Connor, who restated his February thoughts.

So what's the next step for the franchise, beyond Halo Legends and Halo: Reach?

We have about six years of planning done already - and each of the things we put in there... well, if you see a mystery in the anime, there's a reason why it's in there and there will be a payoff for it. So if you see something and think, 'that's weird', there's a purpose.

That's a really nice luxury that we have - and we've watched other franchises get stuck in a place where they have to make it up as they go along for all sorts of reasons. We're lucky; we have a plan and we can simply execute on it. The partnership with Marvel was something of a testbed for Halo Legends.

So you're looking six years ahead?

Yep.

That's pretty crazy. But it begs the question: with the DVD out and the film still optioned, is 343 going to push to have the film produced once again? What's the latest? Seems like, ever since Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp moved on from it, things have gone very quiet.

The last iteration of the film project, well, it was kind of out of our hands. It had to do with the film studios and how they were handling it. But we're Microsoft - and we have the luxury of being able to literally afford to sit back and wait for the right partners and the right time. It would've been great to have created a film with Jackson and Blomkamp - and I think Blomkamp demonstrated that pretty effectively in District 9. But the timing wasn't right and the studios couldn't come to the right agreement that we needed so we can just sit back and wait for the correct partner.

The good news is, I certainly learned a lot from that process and I think we as a studio have as well - and when it does happen, we'll have all of our materials ready and we'll have all of the 'problem spaces' explored already. We were very far from naive when we walked into it, but I think we learned a lot.

What were something of the things you learned coming out of the breakdown of the film undertaking? Is the official line that the Halo film is 'on hiatus'?

It sounds like PR, but it literally is 'on hiatus'. We're just waiting for the timing to be right. Really, we learned about how intra-office politics work and what their interests and focuses and concerns are, compared to ours. Ours are mostly about creative integrity and making sure we're true to the universe. We've always been flexible enough to know that when you make a movie, you have to work with people and make compromises so that it's a movie, not a game. They're very different mediums. So those are the learnings that we've had over the years. ...And I can't claim that any of it surprised us, but it's nice to have a map of the territory.

We tend to think the Halo film will resurface within the next couple of years - in line with a new product announcement, we'd wager. 'Timing' is key.

So would you say it's inevitable, within your six year plan, we're going to see a Halo film one way or the other?

Umm, I wouldn't put a time limit on it like that, but yeah - I would assume that it's 'an attractive motion picture property'. You know.

That's delicately handled. [laughs]

Well, you know, just for scale, I just found out that the director of 2012, Roland Emmerich, is looking to pick up Isaac Asimov's Foundation series.

I know - I cried a little bit.

And Foundation is an amazing, amazing series of novels - but it's not a giant Hollywood blockbuster action piece. So basically, what we're learning from that is the appetite for big sci-fi is there and people are looking around for interesting franchises.

Yeah, and I suppose 'don't hire Uwe Boll or Roland Emmerich for Halo is the short answer there.

[laughs] Yeah, well, one of those is more attractive than the other.
