HISTORY
The idea of X-Men: First Class was first reported in July 2008 when Production Weekly listed the title under 20th Century Fox. A comic series was released starting in September 2006 which told "stories of the team that laid the foundation of a mutant dynasty." A young X-Men project was being discussed at Fox, though no other details were revealed at the time.

In November 2008, Josh Schwartz (The OC, Chuck, Gossip Girl) was brought on board to write the screenplay. It was also reported that Schwartz declined an option to direct the film, but was expected to "inject a next-gen sensibility into the superhero series." Lauren Shuler Donner, who produced all the X-Men films for Fox, and Simon Kinberg were attached as producers. Along with Zak Penn, Kinberg wrote the screenplay for X-Men: The Last Stand.

In April 2009, Shuler Donner revealed that the film would follow "young Scott, young Jean, young Beast" and the first students at Xavier's School for the Gifted. Also in April, Donner revealed that she would love to have Bryan Singer back in the director's chair and Patrick Stewart back in the role of Professor X. Singer directed X-Men and X2: X-Men United before leaving to direct Superman Returns. In August 2009, it was reported that Bryan Singer was "flirting" with the project, though had not accepted any offers.

Donner's wish came true in December 2009 when Bryan Singer announced at the Avatar premiere that he will direct X-Men: First Class. The following day, screenwriter Jamie Moss joined the film as well. A day after that, Singer said the film will be about "the formative years of Xavier and Magneto, and the formation of the school and where there relationship took a wrong turn." In that same article, the film was compared to J.J. Abrams' summer blockbuster, Star Trek, which followed the first years of the Enterprise crew.

A few months later in March 2010, it was reported that Bryan Singer would no longer be directing the project but would stay on as a producer. Singer instead signed a deal to direct Jack the Giant Killer for a summer production start.

By the end of April, Fox had begun its search for a new director which resulted in Matthew Vaughn signing on to direct. It was also announced that Zack Stentz and Ashley Edward Miller, who also worked on Thor, were on board to rewrite a script based on Bryan Singer's treatment. X-Men: First Class received a release date of June 3, 2011 and is expected to start filming this summer.

On May 28th, the role of Charles Xavier was filled by James McAvoy. June 2010 saw Benjamin Walker cast as Hank McCoy/Beast and Michael Fassbender cast as Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto.
