Gary Ross to Rewrite Spider-Man 4

Variety is reporting that Gary Ross has come aboard to rewrite the script for Spider-Man 4.

Gary Ross wrote and directed Seabiscuit and Pleasantville, both of which starred Spider-Man lead Tobey Maguire. Sam Raimi will again direct the Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios project that will go into production early next year.

The Spider-Man 4 script was originally written by James Vanderbilt, and then rewritten by David Lindsay-Abaire.

The second installment also had several writers that began with Smallville duo Alfred Gough and Miles Millar before switching hands to Michael Chabon. The film finally ended up in the hands of Alvin Sargent who finalized the script.

The fourth installment is scheduled for a May 6, 2011 release.
