Marvel Studios Comic-Con Panel (With Pictures and Video)
July 24, 2010

The Marvel Studios panel goes from 6:00 to 7:00 PM (PST), with the Avengers cast expected to take center stage.

(L-R) Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man), Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Steve Rogers/Captain America), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton/Hawkeye), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk), Joss Whedon (Director) and Kevin Feige (Producer)

  • 3-D glasses were handed out at the start of the panel.

  • Official Avengers website live with a splash logo.

  • The panel is late to start with Jon Favreau's Cowboys & Aliens panel finishing up a bit late due to an apparent stabbing in Hall H. The panel officially started at 6:43 PM (PST).

  • President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige was the first to take the stage with a S.H.I.E.L.D. hat. He was the only previously announced guest for the panel.

  • Captain America: The First Avenger video: World War II footage starts the footage with planes bombing, anti-aircraft guns firing and soldiers marching. On screen text displays "In the world's greatest conflict, Our courage and strength led us into battle. Stories Emerged of heroes, But one story has never been told." A red, white and blue background slowly pulls back to reveal Captain America's iconic shield. A voiceover of Teddy Roosevelt states "Today we must create the finest army in history, and every army starts with one man." Captain America is seen in the shadows. "Next summer, meet the world's first Avenger." A quick glance of Chris Evans as Captain America before the logo screen. The video ends with Captain America throwing his shield at the camera.

  • Director Joe Johnston, Chris Evans and Hugo Weaving are the next guests to take the stage. The footage above was built from test footage featuring Evans in costume.

  • Johnston: "A love story with an edge." Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of his favorite films. It feels as modern today as when it was made. "That's what we're going for here. We have one chance to tell the origin story of Captain America and that's what we're going to do."

  • Evans started filming only five days ago.

  • Hugo Weaving on the Red Skull: "He's German. I spent a little time listening to famous German artists. Sort of synthesized their voices into the voice of Red Skrull." He then tells the crowd "You might get to hear some."

  • Joe Johnston is a big fan of Ed Brubaker's Captain America and is borrowing some elements for the costume.

  • The Captain America costume leaked online recently is a cartoonish version and not the final one you see in the movie.

  • Evans: The origin story is "when you really get to connect to them." He continued, "We don't have to end the story. It opens the door to some really great evolutions that the character can go through."

  • Johnston on Steve Rogers: "You have to like him as much before the transformation as after. You have to establish his character before he transforms."

  • Weaving, who has only worn the Red Skull mask one day so far: "It's a pretty extraordinary creation. I've only started to get into making that mask work. It's pretty exciting."

  • Captain America has only been shooting for eight days.

  • More video from Captain America: Norway, May 1942. Two men stand in a stone castle as one of the walls is busted inward, crushing one of the men. The room fills with Nazis/HYDRA soldiers as they restrain the older gentleman. The soldiers go to an elaborate coffin with an intricate stone design on top. "Open it, quickly, before he gets here!"

Johann Schmidt (Weaving), pre-Red Skull, enters through the hole in the wall. "It took me a long time to find this place." The old man asks "What you seek is just a legend." Schmidt responds "Then why make such an effort to conceal it?" Schmidt then easily pushes the heavy slab off the coffin, revealing a skeleton clutching a cube. Weaving calls the cube the tesseract, a jewel of Odin's treasure room. He grabs the cube but realizes it's fake and throws the piece on the ground, shattering it. "It is not something one buries, but I think it is close, yes?"

Schmidt walks to an elaborate door with a carving of a large tree. "Tree of the world, garden of wisdom and fate." He reaches out and touches a snake eye in handle, which opens a container filled with a glowing blue light. He then looks inside and then back up at the old man. "You have never seen this, have you?" The old, defiant man answers "It is not for the eyes of ordinary men" to which Schmidt answers "Exactly!"

  • The cast and director of Captain America exit stage to return to London and Thor director Kenneth Branagh enters. As with everyone at Comic-Con, this was the first time Branagh has seen the Captain America footage. "Very exciting to be part of the Marvel Universe."

  • Regarding Thor, Branagh loved the fact that he's a character that's a mix of primitive brute strength, in a dysfunctional family along with epic stories and monsters which "Completely captured my imagination."

  • Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Kat Dennings (Darcy), Natalie Portman (Jane Foster) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor) enter stage.

  • Hemsworth referenced the comics for Thor's movements and actions when holding Mjolnir. He said the costume helps bring it all together.

  • Hemsworth on Hopkins: "One of the most humble and talented people you've ever met."

  • Dennings on her character, Darcy, a new creation for the movie: "Little helper gnome" and sister/protege to Jane Foster.

  • Hiddleston on Loki: "He's both the agent of chaos and the damaged younger brother. He coulda been the guy, but he's not the guy." He continued, "Combine the mischeif and the relish in the anarchy he creates with truthful psychological damage."

  • Gregg on Agent Coulson: He's the "Glue of the Marvel Universe." He didn't know that his character would be crossing over into all the films in such a big way.

  • Thor footage (with 3-D glasses): Open on S.H.I.E.L.D. base where Thor is being interrogated by Agent Coulson, who doesn't understand where he learned his abilities. Thor breaks free from a hospital, causing mayhem including a dropkick during his escape. Thor is shown kicking behind in the rain cross-cut with Coulson's interrogation. Asgard is shown along with Odin and the Warrior's Three. After yelling and a big argument, Thor is stripped of his title and Mjolnir by Odin. He is then cast out of Asgard and lands in New Mexico where Jane Foster finds him and brings the Norse god to the hospital where Darcy salivates over him. "Oh no, this is Earth, isn't it?" He sees the hammer but is not worthy yet of its power and is unable to lift it. "Your ancestors called it magic. You call it science. Where I come from, they're one and the same." Back on Asgard, Loki takes control. After the logo is shown, a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent asks "Is that one of Stark's?" to which Coulson replies, "That guy doesn't tell me anything." The Destroyer is then shown on Earth, who sends lasers blasting out, blowing up cars in the process.

  • Branagh on 'Donald Blake surprises' in the movies: "We wanted to put them in, but not in the usual way."

  • Jane Foster (Portman) will not be in the Avengers but may appear in future Thor films.

  • Feige: "Frank Castle is under the roof of Marvel Studios now and we hope to bring him into the fray shortly." The previous two Punisher films were distributed through Lionsgate. Ray Stevenson, who played Castle in Punisher: War Zone is playing Volstagg, one of the Warrior's Three, in Thor.

  • Avengers teaser is shown with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) narrating. Classic Avengers logo is shown.

  • Jackson enters stage along with Clark Gregg, Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo and director Joss Whedon.

  • Mark Ruffalo is officially announced as Bruce Banner and Edward Norton is 100% out.

  • Ant-Man was going to assemble also, but he was stepped on backstage.

  • Whedon: "I'm very nervous, I need your love and support."

  • The panel ends with photo opportunities and a loud applause from the crowd.
