In August 2007, director Matthew Vaughn was hired to direct a live action feature film based on the character, with a script written by Mark Protosevich. Protosevich has said the film is "going to be like a super hero origin story, but not one about a human gaining super powers, but of a god realizing his true potential. It's the story of a Old Testament god who becomes a New Testament god." Filming will begin at the end of 2008 in the United Kingdom.

On May 5, 2008 during Marvel's Quarter 1 webcast, it was announced that Thor will be released on June 4, 2010.
